Film night on your TV: which picture settings to switch off

The critic

Your TV ships tuned to dazzle a shop floor, not to show a film. Five settings do most of the damage: motion smoothing, sharpening, noise reduction, the Vivid picture mode and overscan. Filmmaker Mode switches most of them off in one press, but names and behaviour vary by brand and model.

Flip the five switches below and see what each one changes.
