The Others is still one of the best of the modern ghost stories, and the new 4K restoration is a good excuse to see its candlelit gloom at full size. Kidman holds the screen and Amenábar builds dread from restraint rather than shocks.
Critics split on pace: Ebert found it too slow, others found it spellbinding. If you like a quiet build, it earns its place in your October.
